Not sure where a painting would live in your home? Start with the room.

Room by room

Living room: Abstract work does well over a sofa or console. Hang it so the center sits around eye level, and let bold color be the focal point.

Bedroom: Place it above the headboard or on the wall you see when you wake up. Calmer, softer pieces suit this space.

Office or studio: Hang it where you look up from your screen. Color and movement can make a workspace feel more alive.

Entryway or hallway: Smaller pieces work well here, and they make a good first impression.

Which size for which wall

  • 8" x 10": Small spaces, shelves, and gallery-wall groupings. Hang 3 or 4 together for a bigger statement.
  • 11" x 14": A good middle size for a desk wall, a bedroom nightstand area, or a narrow stretch of hallway.
  • 12" x 12": The square works well above a console or in a pair.
  • 12" x 16": Over a dresser, a small sofa, or a desk.
  • 16" x 20": The statement size. It can anchor a wall by itself, such as above a sofa or bed.

Rule of thumb: a piece, or a grouping of them, should fill about two-thirds of the width of the furniture beneath it.

Every painting ships unframed on canvas board, and all five sizes are standard ready-made frame sizes, so finding a frame is easy.

Quick tips

  • Leave a few inches of breathing room around the piece.
  • Pick one color from the painting and echo it in a pillow, vase, or rug.
  • Not sure? Tape paper cut to the painting's size on the wall and live with it for a day.
